About Chris Kenney

As a young child I displayed a natural talent for drawing and my favorite subject was animals.  I remember making a book of pictures of zoo animals for my mother when I was about 8 years old.  Although I was encouraged to do art as a child, we moved around a lot, and I didn't take any art classes past the third grade for fear I was too far behind.  It wasn't until my early twenties that I started to draw and paint regularly.    I have been drawing and painting now for over thirty-five years and even though I've always had a full-time job (not art related), I continue to pursue my dream of one day becoming a full-time fine artist.

I started out drawing Disney characters for my friends, then moved on to painting animals from wildlife magazines.  I particularly loved painting large wild cats such as cougars and lions and large birds like swans and geese.   Over the years I have worked with pen and ink, pastels, watercolors, and acrylics; I eventually got up the courage to work in oils which had always been my dream.   In 2013 I began plein air painting (painting outside) and fell in love with it.  I painted all around my neighborhood dragging my "art cart" (shopping cart pictured behind me to the right above) around with my easel and pochade box.  I enjoyed painting from life and liked to paint peaceful images.

From Jan. 2021 to Nov. 2022, I was a member of Dustin Neece's Painting Membership, a group of artists who met online regularly to discuss painting, learn from Dustin, and grow as artists.  Dustin is a wonderful teacher, and I am very grateful to have studied with him.  From Feb. 2023 to Nov. 2024, I took courses in the Watts Atelier Online Program to further develop my skills and pursue my artistic goals.  Starting in Jan. 2025 I will be a member of Mastrius.com where I can continue to grow into a well-rounded artist with more community and mentorship.
